How are sleep wrinkles formed?

Sleep wrinkles are fine lines, or folds, on the facial skin that appear as a result of pillow pressure during sleep. They most commonly form in the area around the eyes, on the forehead or on the cheeks. Although aging and genetic predisposition play a major role, there are a number of measures that can significantly slow the appearance of sleep lines or minimize their depth.

Why do wrinkles appear?

As we age, the production of collagen and elastin, key substances that ensure skin firmness and elasticity, declines.
A weaker skin barrier is more susceptible to mechanical damage, dehydration and muscle sagging.

What happens to the face when we sleep?

Intensive cell regeneration occurs during sleep, but pillows can disrupt this recovery. Slowed blood supply at sites of sustained pressure leads to poorer nutrition and oxygenation of the tissues.

Sleeping on the side and on the stomach puts considerable pressure on one half of the face.
Head movements during the night cause friction between the skin and the pillow surface, leading to the formation of small injuries and subsequent deposition of collagen fibers in tight lines.

Insufficient hydration promotes the brittleness of fine lines.
The skin loses the ability to immediately "fill" the groove, which becomes permanent over time after repeated pressure.

What impairs collagen production?

Cortisol (stress hormone) increases collagen catabolism, but also UV radiation, polluted air and irregular sleep accelerate skin aging.

Other influences that can also exacerbate sleep wrinkles.

  • Frequent sleeping at the same crouched or sideways angle
  • Low humidity in the room
  • Use of coarse bedding materials (cotton with thick stitching)
  • Insufficient nighttime skin care
  • Drying of the skin with bedding made of fabrics that absorb liquid and creams
  • Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and inappropriate diet

How to prevent sleep wrinkles?

  • Adequate hydration of the skin during sleep. Ideally, one that lasts throughout your sleep. We recommend combinations of ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and peptides that promote skin firmness.
  • Drinking regime. Of course, the quantity with regard to the quality of sleep, so that, on the contrary, a larger amount does not disturb your sleep.
  • Quality and length of sleep. Adherence to a sleep regime generally helps to overall health.
  • Optimal sleeping position, it is recommended to sleep on your back, thus minimizing local pressure on the face.
If you sleep on your side, choose a pillow that does not put pressure on your face

Choosing the right pillow

Special shaping medical pillow with a central depression or anatomical grooves will keep your head in the correct position.
The Pillowe pillow has special cut-outs on the edges to prevent pressure on the entire facial area when sleeping on your side, which significantly reduces friction and skin deformation. The simple cut-out shape is designed to support the head only in areas where the pressure will not create wrinkles. At the same time, it is so soft that the other points that support the head do not create an uncomfortable blister, horseradish on the cervical spine, or on the temple and chin area.
